Key Terms to know when Shopping for Replacement Cushions
Acrylic
An ideal fiber used for outdoor fabrics.
Back Cushion
A term describing the cushions that sits vertically on patio furniture
such as sofa or lounge chair. The back cushion is usually thinner
than the seat cushion.
Back Pad
A term describing a pad (1 inch thick or so) that sits vertically
on sofa, lounge chair, etc for added comfort.
Binder Fiber
A term describing the fibers used to bind polyester or polyester
blends together to form cushion filler.
Bonding
The process in which the polyester filler is bound together to form
a cushion filler. This term is used in conjunction with binder fiber.
Casing
The exterior of the cushion. The casing is the fabric exterior with
a zipper sewn in allowing for removal of the core (filler).
Chair Pad
A term used to describe a pad used for added comfort on patio furniture.
A chair pad is not as thick as a cushion.
Contrasting Welt
A decorative border at the edges of the cushion. Contrasting welts
use a color that is contrasting to the fabric used on cushion. For
example, a tan contrasting welt on canvas blue fabric.
Core
A term to describe the filler which is inserted into the casing.
Cord
A decorative border at the edges of the cushion. The cord is a more
decorative replacement for the welt.
Cushion
A thick pad used as a rest, support, or shock absorber on patio
furniture
Cycle Testing
A test manufacturers use to determine durability of cushion filler.
Custom Order
Replacement cushions are available in custom orders. Typically you
pick your fabric and are non-refundable.
Deep Seating
Term that describes large cushions for exceptional comfort in a
casual environment.
Dimensions
Term that describes the width, height, depth, and thickness of cushions.
Drain Panel
Usually a mesh panel sewn into the bottom of a cushion to allow
water to drain more efficiently. These cushions are not reversible.
Dupont Teflon
Stain resistant chemical applied to fabrics when manufactured.
Fabric
Term to describe the cloth produced for the casing of the cushion.
Fill
A term used to describe the insides of the cushion. There are two
types: loose fill which is sewn into the cushion and a fill which
can be taken out.
Foam
A foam pad used in cushions that typically act as sponges absorbing
water.
Grades
Term used to describe the quality of the material. Factors include
materials used and manufacturing processes. The higher the grade,
the higher the cost.
Jacquards
A fabric with an intricately woven pattern.
Large Pour Foam
A newer type of foam filler that is very porous. Large Pour Foam
is great for outdoor use.
Mildew
Any of various fungi that form a superficial growth on fabrics.
Moisture
Diffuse wetness that can be felt as vapor in the atmosphere or condensed
liquid on the surfaces of objects.
Plaids
A pattern or colors which resemble a Scotch plaid; checkered or
marked with bars or stripes at right angles to one another.
Polyester
A wrinkle resistant fabric used in production of cushion fillers.
Porous
A term that describes a material that allows for easy passage of
water through out.
Print
A term that describes designs painted onto fabrics. For example:
floral patterns are considered a print.
Reversible
A term that describes a cushion that can be turned upside down.
Self Welt
A decorative border at the edges of the cushion. Self welts use
the same fabric used on cushion.
Solid
A term describing a solid color fabric.
Stripe
A term describing a fabric with a series of stripes.
Sunbrella
A manufacturer of high quality outdoor fabrics.
Ultraviolet Rays
The range of invisible radiation wavelengths from the sun.
UV Inhibitor
A chemical applied to the fabric to prevent fading.
Water Flow through Rate
A test that determines the rate of water that flows through a cushion
in a minute.
Welt
A decorative border at the edges of the cushion. See Self welt or
Contrasting welt.
